Week 4 - September 19, 2016
BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT
Tomorrow evening (Tuesday September 20) we will be holding the Lower School “Back to School Night”. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet with your child’s teachers. We will start at 6pm sharp with an information session for all parents in the gymnasium. After that you will be directed to visit the specialist classes and then there will be sessions presented by home room teachers. Please note that this is a parent information session and there will no provision for child minding. We look forward to seeing you all tomorrow night.
NWEA testing will take place the week beginning September 26. As I stated in last weeks newsletter, this is just one test on one day where teachers are able to make assessments about student progress. It is important to remember that there are so many ways to value what our children do on a daily basis. What is important to remember is that these tests do not always assess all of what makes you, and each student at HIS, special and unique. The people who create these tests and score them do not know each of you the way your teachers do. They do not know that you may speak two languages. They do not know that you may be able to play a musical instrument, or that you can dance or paint a picture. They do not know that your friends count on you to be there for them or that your laughter can brighten the dreariest day. They do not know that you write poetry or songs, or participate in sports, wonder about the future or that sometimes you take care of your little brother or sister. They do not know that you have travelled to a really interesting place or that you know how to tell a great story or that you love spending time with special family members and friends. They do not know that you can be trustworthy, kind or thoughtful and that you try, every day to be your very best....the scores you get will tell you something, but they will not tell you everything. So please remember there are many ways of being smart.
WELCOME BACK BARBECUE
The HIS Welcome Back Barbecue will take place on Saturday September 24 between 11.00am and 2.00pm. This will be a fun day with food and entertainment provided. There will be no cost for the food or activities and all family and community members are welcome to attend.
We are currently finalising arrangements for the use of a swimming pool. Once they have been completed we will announce the dates for the swim season.

“Just one hour of coding can improve students’ abilities to learn by themselves. Computer programming builds timeless skills such as checking work for details, how to apply logic and persisting at tasks.
There are some free apps that you can download so that your child can use to get them started with coding.

Auditions were conducted for the Dear Edwina school play last week and today students were notified of what part they will play in the production. Thanks to all students who auditioned, I know that the directors were very impressed with the standard of the auditions. Click this link for a full list of cast members.
Lower School Principal
Thank you to those parents who attended our coffee morning last Friday, it was a positive way to start the year with lots of volunteers.
Our PAFA welcome back luncheon will be held on Friday 30 September at 11:30am. Further details will be communicated this week.
Attached is a list of the volunteer class representatives. Some classes still need a representative and we will have signup sheets available at the back to school nights. It's a great and way to be involved - a small amount of work with a positive impact on your child's school year.
